How to choose the right influencer for a campaign

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated September 18, 2026

Choosing the right influencer starts with checking that their audience’s demographics and interests genuinely overlap with the target customer, then verifying actual engagement rate (comments and likes as a percentage of total followers, not follower count alone), and finally reviewing how their past sponsored content specifically performed compared with their organic posts. Audience overlap is the first filter to apply, since even an influencer with excellent engagement delivers poor campaign results if their followers don’t match the product’s actual target customer, meaning demographic and interest alignment should be verified before engagement metrics are even considered.

Engagement rate calculation (average likes plus comments on recent posts, divided by follower count) reveals whether a following is genuinely active or largely passive or inflated, and an unusually low engagement rate relative to follower count, or comment sections filled with generic, bot-like replies, is a warning sign worth investigating before committing budget.

Finally, reviewing how the influencer’s audience responded specifically to past sponsored or branded content (rather than their organic posts) gives a useful indicator of likely campaign performance, since it directly shows how that particular audience reacts when this creator is promoting a paid partnership rather than posting organic content.
