How to do a competitor analysis

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated September 25, 2026

Begin by selecting direct competitors that sell a similar solution to the same audience and indirect competitors that solve the same problem differently. Review their websites, search visibility, advertising, social media, reviews, pricing approach, offers, content, customer proof, calls to action, and buying process. Use public information and record the date because offers and campaigns change.

Compare each competitor against the same criteria. Identify the audience they target, the promise they make, the evidence they provide, the keywords they cover, the channels they use, and the friction in their enquiry or checkout process. Customer reviews can reveal repeated strengths, complaints, and unmet needs. The purpose is to understand the market, not to copy wording, designs, or campaigns.

Turn the findings into a short action list. A useful gap may be an unanswered customer question, a weak service explanation, a missing comparison page, slow response time, limited proof, or an offer competitors have not addressed. ViralBulls combines this review with keyword, content, traffic, and advertising data where available, then prioritizes opportunities that fit the client’s actual capabilities.
