How to build a digital marketing strategy from scratch

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated September 18, 2026

Building a digital marketing strategy from scratch starts by setting one specific, measurable goal (a target number of leads or sales per month, not a vague aspiration like ‘grow the brand’), then defining the target audience with real specificity (interests, platform behaviour, pain points) rather than broad demographic categories alone. With the goal and audience defined, the next step is auditing which one or two channels that specific audience actually uses most, based on real evidence (competitor activity, small test budgets, existing customer data) rather than assumption about which platforms are generally popular.

A content plan should then be built specifically to support those chosen channels and the stated goal, since content created without a clear channel and goal in mind tends to be generic and underperform content deliberately designed around a specific platform’s format norms and a specific desired action.

Finally, a monthly (or more frequent, early on) review cadence should be established to check actual results against the original goal, since a strategy’s real value comes from this ongoing cycle of measuring, learning, and adjusting the channel mix, content approach, or budget allocation based on genuine performance data, rather than executing a fixed initial plan indefinitely without revision.
