What is performance marketing?
Performance marketing is digital advertising, run primarily through platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads, where a business pays only for specific, trackable actions such as clicks, leads, or completed sales, rather than paying a flat fee for exposure regardless of outcome. This model is possible because digital ad platforms can track user behaviour precisely (via pixels and conversion tracking) from an ad impression all the way through to a completed action on the advertiser’s website, something traditional media like TV or print cannot do with the same precision.
Because campaign activity can be measured against defined outcomes, performance marketing campaigns can be optimised continuously: underperforming ads, audiences, or keywords can be identified and paused quickly, while high-performing elements can have their budget increased, a level of granular, real-time control that isn’t possible in traditional advertising.
Common performance marketing formats include pay-per-click search ads, social media ads targeting specific audience segments, and retargeting campaigns aimed at people who already showed interest, all unified by the same underlying principle of paying for measurable outcomes rather than airtime.
