What is a sales funnel in performance marketing

Performance Marketing 1 min read Updated September 25, 2026

A sales funnel is a way to map the stages a person may pass through before and after becoming a customer. A simple funnel includes awareness, consideration, conversion, and retention. The journey is not always perfectly linear, but the model helps a team understand what information, advertisement, page, and follow up action are needed at each stage.

Awareness content introduces the problem or brand. Consideration content explains the solution, compares options, and provides proof. Conversion campaigns present a relevant offer and direct the person to a form, call, booking, or checkout. Retention activity supports onboarding, repeat purchases, reviews, referrals, and customer value. Metrics should match the stage, such as reach and video attention near the top, qualified leads in the middle, and sales or profit near the bottom.

ViralBulls maps advertisements, landing pages, remarketing, email or messaging follow up, and sales handling as one connected system. This makes it easier to locate a problem. Strong clicks with weak leads may indicate a message or form issue, while qualified leads with few sales may indicate slow follow up or an offer problem.
