How to track ROI on a marketing campaign

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated September 25, 2026

Define the campaign goal and the value of the desired action before launch. For online sales, track completed purchases and revenue. For lead generation, track qualified leads, appointments, closed sales, average profit, and the time between enquiry and purchase. Install analytics and platform conversion tracking, use consistent campaign names and UTM parameters, and test that each event records correctly.

Calculate the full campaign cost, including media spend, creative production, software, agency fees, discounts, and relevant staff time. A common formula is ROI equals net profit from the campaign minus campaign cost, divided by campaign cost, multiplied by 100. If revenue is used instead of profit, the result can make performance look stronger than it is. For longer sales cycles, connect lead data with the CRM so later sales return to the original campaign.

Review attribution carefully because a customer may interact with several channels before converting. ViralBulls reports both leading measures, such as cost per qualified lead, and final measures, such as profit and customer acquisition cost. This prevents a campaign from being labelled successful only because it generated inexpensive but low quality activity.
