Why does a business need a website if it already has social media?

Website Designing 1 min read Updated September 17, 2026

A business needs a website because social platforms can restrict organic reach, change algorithms, or even suspend an account at any time, whereas a website is fully owned property under the business’s control, and a website is often required for basic functions social media can’t handle well, such as accepting direct payments, hosting detailed product catalogues, or supporting SEO. Because a business has no control over a social platform’s terms of service, algorithm changes, or account policies, building a business entirely on a rented platform carries real risk: an account suspension or algorithm shift can eliminate a business’s primary customer channel overnight, something that can’t happen to a self-hosted website.

A website also enables SEO, meaning a business can be discovered through Google search independent of social media, and can host detailed, structured content (product pages, FAQs, case studies) in a format search engines can index, which social media posts generally cannot achieve.

Many customers also still specifically look for a website as a basic credibility check before trusting a business, particularly for larger purchases or B2B relationships, since a business without a website can appear less established or harder to verify than a competitor with one.
