Why is social media important for a business?
Social media matters because it is an important place where customers discover and research brands before buying, and it offers a two-way channel (comments, DMs, reviews) that builds trust faster than one-directional advertising like TV or print. A brand’s social presence often functions as a de facto storefront, since prospective customers routinely check a business’s Instagram or Facebook page to gauge legitimacy, recent activity, and how it responds to customers before making a purchase decision.
The cost structure also matters: organic reach is free, and even paid social advertising can offer more precise targeting and flexible budgets than many traditional media options, because platforms use auction-based ad systems that let a business bid only for the specific audience segment it wants, rather than paying a flat rate to reach an entire broadcast audience regardless of relevance.
Beyond reach and cost, social platforms generate a continuous stream of customer sentiment and behavioural data (which posts get shared, which products get asked about) that a business can use to refine its offering, something traditional advertising channels don’t provide.
