Why are AI search tools changing how SEO works?

SEO & GEO 1 min read Updated September 16, 2026

AI search tools are changing SEO because a growing share of search sessions now end with the user reading an AI-generated summary instead of clicking through a list of links, meaning visibility increasingly depends on being referenced inside that AI answer rather than simply ranking #1 in a traditional results list. This shift changes the incentive structure for content creators: a page can technically rank well in traditional search yet generate fewer clicks if Google’s AI Overview or a chatbot answers the user’s question directly on the results page itself, a phenomenon often described as ‘zero-click search.’

It also changes what kind of content performs best, since AI systems appear to favour content that states facts plainly and early, uses clear structure (headings, lists), and can be verified against multiple independent sources, rather than content optimised primarily for keyword density or backlink volume.

The practical response most SEO practitioners are adopting is writing content that works for both audiences simultaneously: clear, well-structured, fact-forward writing that satisfies a human reader scanning a page and an AI system extracting a citable answer, rather than treating the two as separate content strategies.
