What’s the difference between nano, micro, and macro influencers?

Influencer Marketing 1 min read Updated September 17, 2026

Nano influencers (roughly 1,000-10,000 followers) typically have the highest engagement rates and lowest cost, micro influencers (roughly 10,000-100,000 followers) balance meaningful reach with still-strong engagement, and macro influencers (100,000+ followers) offer the broadest reach but generally at a lower engagement rate and a significantly higher cost per post. This inverse relationship between audience size and engagement rate is a consistent pattern across platforms: as a creator’s following grows, their audience naturally becomes less personally connected to them, and the content mix often shifts toward more brand deals, both of which tend to dilute per-follower engagement over time.

Cost scales with follower count as well, but not always proportionally; nano and micro influencers often charge modest flat fees or work on product-only gifting arrangements, while macro and celebrity-tier influencers command fees that can run into significant sums per post, reflecting both their reach and, often, production-level content quality.

The right tier for a specific campaign depends on the goal: nano and micro influencers tend to suit niche conversion-focused campaigns where trust and relevance matter most, while macro influencers suit broad awareness campaigns where reaching the largest possible audience is the priority, even at a lower relative engagement rate.
