What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving a website’s content, technical structure, and authority signals so that search engines like Google rank it higher for relevant search queries, without paying for that placement. It works across three broad areas: on-page SEO (content quality, keyword targeting, title tags, headings), technical SEO (page speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability, site architecture), and off-page SEO (backlinks from other reputable sites, which act as a trust signal to search engines).
Google uses many signals to determine which pages are most relevant and useful for a query to decide which pages best answer a given query, but relevance to the search term, the page’s authority (largely driven by quality backlinks), and user experience (load speed, mobile usability, low bounce rate) are consistently among the most influential factors.
Unlike paid advertising, SEO doesn’t produce instant results; ranking improvements typically take weeks to months to materialise because search engines need time to crawl, index, and evaluate a page’s authority relative to competing pages, but the resulting traffic continues without ongoing ad spend once rankings are established.
