What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

SEO & GEO 1 min read Updated September 16, 2026

GEO is the practice of structuring and writing content so that AI-powered answer engines like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, or Perplexity cite, summarise, or directly quote it when generating a response to a user’s question, rather than optimising purely for a ranked list of blue links. This is a meaningfully different goal from traditional SEO: instead of winning a click by ranking #1, GEO aims to be the source an AI trusts enough to reference or paraphrase within its generated answer, which may mean the user never clicks through to the website at all, making brand visibility and citation the primary win rather than direct traffic.

Because generative engines synthesize an answer from multiple sources rather than displaying a ranked list, content that is clear, well-structured, and easy to extract as a discrete fact or definition tends to be favoured over content that requires the AI to interpret meaning from dense, unstructured paragraphs.

GEO is an emerging discipline without the mature tooling and established best practices SEO has built over two decades, so current guidance focuses on structural clarity, factual accuracy, and demonstrable authority (author credentials, citations, data) rather than a fixed checklist.
