What is a keyword and why does it matter?
A keyword is the specific word or phrase a person types into a search engine (e.g., ‘best running shoes for flat feet’), and it matters because targeting the right keywords ensures a website’s content actually matches what real searchers are looking for, rather than language the business assumes people use. Keywords vary enormously in search volume (how many people search that exact phrase) and competition (how many other sites are trying to rank for it), and effective keyword research balances the two: a high-volume but highly competitive term like ‘shoes’ is far harder to rank for than a longer, more specific ‘long-tail’ phrase like the flat-feet example, which has lower volume but a much higher chance of ranking and converting.
Keyword intent also matters as much as the keyword itself: a search for ‘what is SEO’ signals someone wanting information, while a search for ‘hire SEO agency‘ signals someone ready to buy, and content should be built to match that intent rather than targeting a keyword purely for its volume.
Modern keyword research tools (Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, SEMrush) surface actual search volume and competition data, replacing guesswork with evidence about what language real customers use.
