How to write a meta description that improves click through rate

How-to Guides 1 min read Updated September 25, 2026

Write the meta description as a concise preview of the page. It should match the searcher’s intent, explain what the page offers, and give a genuine reason to click. Put the most important information early because search results may shorten the text on smaller screens. Use natural language and describe the specific page rather than repeating the same description across the website.

Include a relevant benefit, feature, location, qualification, or next step when it helps the user make a decision. A service page may mention the service and area served, while a product page may mention an important feature or availability. Avoid keyword lists, exaggerated claims, excessive capital letters, and promises that the page cannot support. Google may create a different search snippet when another part of the page better matches the query, so the on page content must support the description.

After publishing, review impressions, average position, and click through rate in Search Console. Compare pages with similar intent and improve descriptions that receive visibility but few clicks. ViralBulls treats the meta description as an advertisement for a relevant page, while keeping the wording accurate enough to build trust after the click.
