What is Meme Marketing?
Meme marketing is using culturally relevant, humorous image or video formats that are already popular and recognisable online to promote a brand in a way that feels native to a social media feed rather than like a conventional advertisement. Because memes spread through shared cultural references and formats that audiences already recognise and enjoy, brand content built on these formats can feel like it belongs in the feed alongside content from friends and other creators, rather than reading as an interruption the way a traditional banner or video ad typically does.
Effective meme marketing generally requires using an existing, currently popular meme format or template (rather than inventing an entirely original joke structure) and applying it to something genuinely relevant to the brand or a topical moment, since audiences can quickly tell when a brand is forcing a trend it doesn’t understand, an outcome often mocked online as ‘cringe’ marketing.
Because meme relevance is extremely time-sensitive (a format can go from trending to stale within days or even hours), meme marketing generally requires a faster content production and approval process than a typical brand campaign, which is one reason it tends to be run by dedicated social media teams empowered to post quickly rather than through a lengthy traditional approval chain.
