What is social media marketing?

Social Media Marketing 1 min read Updated September 15, 2026

Social media marketing is the practice of using platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube to build a brand’s presence, engage an audience, and drive measurable business outcomes such as traffic, leads, or sales. It combines three distinct activities that are often lumped together: organic content (posts, reels, stories), paid promotion (boosted posts and targeted ad campaigns), and community management (replying to comments and DMs, moderating discussion).

Each platform’s algorithm decides how far organic content travels based on engagement signals, watch time, and relevance to the viewer, which is why identical content can perform very differently on Instagram versus LinkedIn. Paid social uses advertising budget to place content in front of selected audience segments in front of a defined audience segment, using targeting criteria like age, location, interests, or past website visits.

A social media marketing programme typically starts with defining which platform(s) match the target audience, then builds a content calendar, a posting cadence, and a measurement framework (reach, engagement rate, conversions) before layering paid promotion on top of organic content that is already performing well.
