What is llms.txt and does my website need one?

SEO & GEO 1 min read Updated September 23, 2026

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown-based file placed at the root of a website, such as example.com/llms.txt. Its purpose is to give AI tools a curated, easy-to-read map of important pages and supporting information. It is sometimes described as a guide for language models, but it is not the same as robots.txt, which controls crawler access.

Most websites do not currently need an llms.txt file. It is a voluntary proposal rather than a universal web standard, and support varies between tools. Google has stated that Search, including its generative AI features, does not use llms.txt as a special ranking or visibility signal. OpenAI provides separate guidance for allowing its search crawler, but it does not promise that an llms.txt file will improve ChatGPT citations. Creating one therefore does not replace crawlable pages, useful content, structured navigation, sitemaps, or established SEO work.

ViralBulls treats llms.txt as an optional experiment, especially for documentation-heavy or technically complex websites where a curated content map may help compatible tools. It should be accurate, maintained, and created only after the fundamentals are healthy. If time or budget is limited, invest first in indexability, content quality, internal links, schema, brand consistency, and authoritative mentions.
