Can a website rank well in AI search but poorly in Google search?

SEO & GEO 1 min read Updated September 23, 2026

Yes, it can happen because AI platforms and traditional Google results do not always retrieve, evaluate, or display information in the same way. An AI answer may cite a page that gives an unusually precise explanation, contains original data, or answers a narrow follow-up question, even when that page does not rank prominently for a broad Google keyword. Different AI products may also use different indexes, partners, models, and freshness signals.

However, AI visibility is not completely separate from SEO. Google says pages used as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. ChatGPT search also needs access to a site’s public content through its search crawler. If a website has serious crawling, indexing, quality, or reputation problems, those weaknesses can limit its visibility across both search and AI experiences.

A website should therefore avoid choosing between ‘Google SEO’ and ‘AI SEO.’ ViralBulls first fixes technical discoverability, content quality, search intent, internal linking, and authority. It then improves answer clarity, entity consistency, expert attribution, and original information that AI systems can use. A citation from one prompt is useful, but sustainable visibility comes from being discoverable and credible across many relevant searches and platforms.
