What makes a meme go viral?

Meme Marketing 1 min read Updated September 18, 2026

A meme goes viral through a combination of precise timing with a currently trending format, genuine (rather than forced) humour, and simplicity that makes people want to remix, adapt, or share the format themselves rather than just view it passively. Timing is critical because meme formats have a limited cultural relevance window, meaning content using a format at its peak popularity tends to spread far more than the same joke applied to a format that’s already fading from cultural conversation, which is why speed of production and posting matters heavily in meme marketing.

Genuine humour, meaning content that would make sense and land as funny even without any brand attached, tends to outperform content where the humour feels secondary to an obvious sales message, since audiences are generally quick to detect and resist content that feels like advertising wearing a meme’s clothing rather than an actual joke.

Format simplicity also drives virality specifically because it enables remixing: a meme template simple enough for other users to easily adapt with their own text or context tends to spread further than a more complex, polished piece of content that can only be consumed passively rather than participated in and reshared with personal variations.
