Creating a\u00a0<strong>Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business)<\/strong>\u00a0is an important way to attract new customers to your business through Google search and Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Google Business Profile (Google My Business)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google Business Profile is a free business listing from Google. It allows you to provide details and photos of your business, including your location, services, and products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating this free profile is a great way to increase your visibility across Google services. Information from your Google Business Profile may appear in Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google Business Profile is\u00a0only available to businesses that have contact with customers. This includes businesses with a physical location (like a restaurant or store) and businesses that provide services by meeting with clients in other locations (like consultants or plumbers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an online-only business, you\u2019ll have to stick to other Google tools like\u00a0Google Ads\u00a0and\u00a0Google Analytics.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why you need a Google My Business account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get discovered in Google (and Google Maps)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re looking for foot traffic or web traffic, Google is the ultimate search referrer. A Google Business Profile helps ensure that people find your business when looking for products and services like yours in their local area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Google My Business listing shows searchers where and how to visit your business. A Google Business Profile also improves your local SEO. In particular, a listing for a local business is more likely to appear when people search for a nearby business using Google Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Control your online business information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Google My Business profile allows you to control and update your contact information, business hours, and other essential details as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can post updates to share that you\u2019ve expanded services, temporarily closed, or fully reopened (an especially useful feature during emergencies like COVID-19). Google Business Profiles have strong local SEO, so the information you share will rank above third-party sites that might have out-of-date details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build trust through reviews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reviews are a key element of\u00a0social proof, and a meaningful way to build trust and credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s combined star rating and space for detailed reviews allows customers to share as much or as little information about their experience with your business as they like. All of it helps future potential customers decide which businesses to visit and products to buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be scary to think about reviews coming in on such a public platform, especially since you can\u2019t pick and choose which Google My Business reviews to share. (Although you can respond to all reviews, as we\u2019ll explain later.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t panic: Google\u00a0finds\u00a0that a combination of positive and negative reviews is more trustworthy than page after page of glowing recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to set up a Google Business Profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Sign in to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/business.google.com\/?skipLandingPage=true&amp;gmbsrc=ww-ww-et-gs-z-gmb-v-z-h~bhc-core-u%7Cmybb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Business Profile Manager<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already logged into a Google account, you\u2019re automatically logged into Google Business Profile Manager. Otherwise, enter your usual Google account login details or create a new Google account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Add your business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter your business name. If it does not appear in the drop-down menu, click&nbsp;<strong>Add your business to Google<\/strong>. Then add your business address. You may also be asked to position a marker for the location on a map. If your business does not have a location customers can visit but offers in-person services or deliveries, you can list your service areas. You\u2019ll find yourself in the Business Profile Manager dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/google-my-business-10-620x341.png\" alt=\"Google My Business Profile Manager overview\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/google-my-business-10.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, you can manage your business profile, view insights, manage reviews and messages, and create Google ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to optimize your Google My Business profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google determines local search ranking based on three factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Relevance<\/strong>: How well your Google My Business listing matches a search<\/li><li><strong>Distance<\/strong>: How far your location is from the search or searcher<\/li><li><strong>Prominence<\/strong>: How well-known your business is (based on factors like links, number of reviews, review score, and SEO)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some steps you can take to maximize your score for all three factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete all elements of your profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/10515606?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2.7 times<\/a>&nbsp;more likely to consider your business reputable if you have a complete Google Business Profile. They\u2019re also 70% more likely to actually visit your location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google specifically&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/7091#zippy=%2Center-complete-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cbusinesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches.\u201d This improves your score for relevance. Use images consistent with those on your social profiles to make it easier for people to recognize your brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t stop there. Add images and videos to showcase your location, work environment, and team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you run a restaurant, post pictures of your meals, menus, and dining room. Make sure they look appetizing, professional, and aren\u2019t low res. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/6335804?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=6334885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google<\/a>, businesses with photos receive more requests for directions and more clicks through to their websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to add or edit photos to your profile on Google:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>From the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/business.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dashboard<\/a>, click on&nbsp;<strong>Photos<\/strong>&nbsp;in the left menu.<\/li><li>Start by adding your logo and cover photo. Incorporate them in a natural way into your business description. Don\u2019t stuff keywords or use irrelevant ones \u2013&nbsp;this can actually hurt your search ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encourage and answer reviews and questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People trust other people more than they trust businesses. A good review can be the deciding factor that tips prospective customers in your favor. Reviews also improve your Google ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best time to ask for a review is after providing a great experience. To make it easier, Google provides a direct link to ask customers to review your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To share your review request link:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. From the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/business.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dashboard<\/a>, scroll down to the button that says&nbsp;<strong>Share review form.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/google-my-business-11-620x207.png\" alt=\"Google My Business Profile Manager share review form\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/google-my-business-11.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Copy and paste the link into a message to customers, or into your autoresponder and online receipts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot turn off reviews for your Google My Business page. And it wouldn\u2019t be in your interest to do that anyway, as reviews show customers that your business is legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, you can flag and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/4596773\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report inappropriate reviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, you can (and should!) respond to reviews, both positive and negative. According to a survey by Google and Ipsos Connect, businesses that respond to reviews are considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.withgoogle.com\/free-google-training\/how-to-respond-to-google-reviews\/#!\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.7 times more trustworthy<\/a>&nbsp;than those that don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Respond professionally in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/how-to-build-an-authentic-voice-on-social\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your brand voice<\/a>. If responding to a negative review, be honest and offer an apology when it\u2019s warranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To view and respond to reviews, click the&nbsp;<strong>Reviews<\/strong>&nbsp;tab in the left menu of your Business Profile Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep your business information up to date<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to edit your business profile if you change your hours of operation, contact information, etc. Nothing annoys customers more than showing up within operating hours only to find you closed. If you have special hours for holidays or even as a one-off, make sure they are reflected in your Google Business Profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also create Google My Business posts to share updates, product news, offers, and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To edit your business information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can get back to the dashboard to make edits at any time at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/business.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">business.google.com<\/a>. You can also edit your business information directly from Google search or Maps.
